“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its troubles… it empties today of its strength.”
~ Corrie Ten Boom
I read this recently and thought it too good not to share:
What We Worry About
40% are things that will never happen
30% are about the past – which can’t be changed
12% are about criticism by others, mostly untrue
10% are about health, which gets worse with stress
8% are about real problems that can be solved.
8%… that just can’t be right! I would venture a guess that women worry more than men (no stats here just my gut) and mothers take that worry to an even new level. Anybody agree with me?
In a recent Bible study with our MOPS Steering Team, we learned about worry, concern, and most important – why God commands us not to worry. Joanna Weaver writes in Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, “Worry doesn’t prevent bad things from happening. In fact, it may prevent us from leading the full lives God intends us to live.” Wow… how quickly we slip from minor worries to complete compulsion – and all the while losing our focus on God and his desire for our lives.
So what is the difference between toxic worry and genuine concern? Pastor Gary E. Gilley puts it like this, “Worry is allowing problems and distress to come between us and the heart of God. It is the view that God has somehow lost control of the situation and we cannot trust Him. A legitimate concern presses us closer to God and causes us to lean and trust on Him all the more.”

So, as you think about how worry impacts your life, consider these words from Paul. “Do not be anxious in anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
Guided by this passage from the Bible, Joanna Weaver breaks it down into three concise steps to victory over worry:
1. Be anxious about nothing.
2. Be prayerful about everything.
3. Be thankful for all things.
Do you let worry rule your life? How do you handle worry and stress?
